Parents know that summer presents a unique challenge.
The kids are out of school and need to fill the long, hot days with something useful and challenging.
It just might be time to find a fun summer hobby or take on a new project.
The folks at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware store (2553 S. Colorado Blvd.) will happily introduce older kids and adults to the art of woodworking through a series of free demonstrations and classes that range from basic whittling — an old-fashioned summertime classic — to advanced cabinetry.
Swing by every Saturday for free workshops on varying topics. Today’s demo, for instance, is about outdoor furniture and will cover the best options for durable finishes in Colorado’s high-altitude climate. It starts at 9:30 a.m.
“We’ll talk about UV protections, moisture protection for both winter and summer, and whether a project needs paint, oil or a spar finish,” says Curt Vogt, an assistant manager at the store who handles many of the scheduled demonstrations. A spar finish is “a clear wood finish that stands up to sunlight and moisture, similar to what they use on boats.”
These are meant to be hands-on demonstrations, so onlookers are encouraged to jump in and help with each project.
“Last week I did a demo on prep and finishing and focused on the proper techniques for scraping paint,” Vogt says. “I had five guys helping me scrape one bench, but they got to practice their skills and learn how to use the right tools.”
Other upcoming classes include Woodworking 101 on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, and Beginning Woodcarving, a class that helps students turn out hand-carved wooden cowboy boots. The instructor of that class, Derrell Poole, also carves intricate miniature carousel horses.
More ambitious students might try a class on custom cabinetry or handmade log furniture.
“We support the full range of skill levels,” Vogt says, “whether you just have a desk or a small bench at home, or a full workshop.”
“Our job,” he adds, “is to inspire woodworkers and hopefully introduce new people to a lifelong hobby.”
