A 10-year-old Wellington boy is recovering after a bicycle brake handle impaled his right side but missed his major organs, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports.

Alex Romero told the Coloradoan he was riding his bike Tuesday night near his home when he jumped off a curb and fell. The brake on the bike handle pierced his right side right above the hip.

“I looked down and saw that it was in my gut and my skin was stretched, so I started to freak out,” the boy told the newspaper.

Friends ran for help and a firefighter, who happened to be driving by, dialed 911.

One neighbor brought a tool kit and Ronnie Romero, Alex’s father, detached the handle bars from the brake handle, which was still in his side. the Coloradoan reported.

Romero was rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital. A CAT scan showed that the handle had missed all major organs.
