AURORA, Colo.—A former Aurora mortgage broker faces theft and forgery charges for allegedly submitting false documents and stealing money from the buyer and seller in a real estate transaction.
The Colorado attorney general’s office announced Monday that 50-year-old Ernie Colter was indicted last month on three counts of theft and one count of forgery. The indictment said Colter promised the buyer $60,000 after closing on the July 2007 purchase of a $700,000 investment property.
Instead, Colter ended up with some $61,000 meant for the seller and the buyer got only $34,000, according to the indictment.
Colter surrendered his mortgage broker license on May 21.
He declined to comment when reached by telephone Monday.
