A man in Colorado Springs ran across a street to help a 62-year-old man who had fallen and hit his head, only to rip off the injured man by stealing his wallet.

The incident happened about 4:45 a.m. Sunday in the 3300 block of East Fountain Boulevard, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department’s crime blotter.

The victim, who has difficulties walking, was crossing South Chelton Road just north of Fountain when he tripped over the curb and struck his head, police said.

A man ran to his assistance and stole the victim’s wallet while pretending to help, police said.

The suspect, described as a black man in his 20s wearing black pants, a white T-shirt and a white hat, then ran back to the Lincoln Springs apartment complex and drove away in a late-model blue Jeep, possibly a Liberty, police said.

The victim suffered scrapes and bruises from the fall, was treated at the scene and released, police said.
