JACKSON, Miss.—Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer will start returning messages on July 1.

Until his first official day of retirement, though, the coach probably won’t have time to respond to all the well-wishers and friends who have sent him hundreds of messages since the team started its improbable run to the College World Series.

Palmer announced in April that he is retiring after 30 years of coaching, all in Mississippi. But his last season has been extended for at least another week.

One call he did take shortly after the Golden Eagles swept Florida in an NCAA super regional to advance to Omaha, Neb., came from Gov. Haley Barbour.

Barbour, a former baseball player who briefly played at Mississippi before quitting the sport, called Palmer to offer congratulations.
