BOULDER, Colo.—Opening statements are underway in the trial of a man charged in the 1997 rape and slaying of a University of Colorado student from Connecticut.

Diego Olmos Alcalde is on trial in Boulder County District Court on charges of murder, rape and kidnapping in the death of 23-year-old Susannah Chase of Stamford, Conn.

Chase was found severely beaten in a Boulder alley on Dec. 21, 1997. Olmos Alcalde, a native of Chile, was arrested in January 2008 based on a DNA sample that was taken from him after a conviction in Wyoming for kidnapping.

A panel of 12 jurors and four alternates was seated Thursday after four days of jury selection.
