LaTraia Scott of Coronado High School in Colorado Springs has been named Colorado’s Gatorade girls track and field athlete of the year. At the Class 5A state track meet, the 5-foot-5 senior won the 100 meters (11.91 seconds) and 200 (23.98), and was the anchor for two Cougars relay teams. She will attend Baylor this fall. Neil H. Ziegler advances in England.
Steve Ziegler of Broomfield, a Legacy High School alumnus now playing for Stanford, upset Scotland’s Gavin Dear in the second round of match play at the British Amateur Championship on the Formby Golf Club course in Liverpool, England. Ziegler won 2-and-1 over Dear, the 18th-ranked amateur in the world, and advanced to face James White today in the third round.
Guerrero leaving Rapids.
By mutual agreement, the Rapids and defender-midfielder Ivan Guerrero terminated his contract with the team. Guerrero, a four- year Major League Soccer veteran, was acquired by Colorado in February in a trade with D.C. United. He had 97 starts for three teams in his career but had not played this season for the Rapids.
Ex-CU lineman dies.
Former University of Colorado offensive and defensive lineman Kevin May died Saturday after a five-year battle with colon cancer, the school announced Wednesday.
May was an all-league guard in high school in Pomona, Calif., and signed with Arizona. He transferred to CU as a sophomore and played in a total of only six games because of injuries. He got his bachelor’s degree from CU and a master’s from Regis. May founded his own business and was also on the faculty at Regis.
Cherry Hills’ Clark cruises.
Helped along by an eagle on the fourth hole, Wyndham Clark, a 15-year-old from Cherry Hills Country Club, rolled to an 11-stroke victory — his third of 2009 — in the Colorado Golf Association Junior Stroke Play Championship at Eaton Country Club. The sophomore-to-be at Valor Christian High School shot a 2-under-par 69 in the final round for an 8-under 205 total.
