BOULDER, Colo.—A Boulder cooperative is planning to begin work on a commercial wine vineyard.

Members of the LaGazza Vineyard & Estates say they want to begin planting on the 40-acre site in southeast Boulder this fall and hope to have their first harvest in 2013.

Cooperative member Robert P. Young says the area has positive conditions to produce grapes with modest water requirements.

Colorado Wine Industry Development Board Executive Director Doug Caskey says only a few types of grapes can grow in Boulder, and those don’t include the most popular varieties. He says it’s possible to grow the less expensive varieties that can still make good wines.
