SANTA FE — A collision involving a wrong-way driver suspected of drinking killed four teenagers just outside Santa Fe early Sunday morning.
Scott Owens, 28, of El Dorado was driving in the oncoming lane of traffic on the Old Las Vegas Highway when his vehicle hit a car carrying five teenagers, Santa Fe County Undersheriff Robert Garcia said.
The 16-year-old driver of the second car tried to swerve away from Owens’ vehicle, but Owens hit the teens’ car broadside as he tried to get back in his own lane just after midnight, Garcia said.
The four dead teens were identified as Julian Martinez, Alyssa Trouw and Kate Klein — all 16 — and Rose Simmons, 15. The driver, Avree Koffman, was in critical condition.
Owens, who was not wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries and was arrested.
