A contractor is assessing the damage from a lightning strike that has shut down the Darlington Prismatic Electric Fountain in City Park’s lake.

The popular lighted fountain apparently was hit during the thunderstorm that swept across the city Thursday afternoon, the Denver Parks and Recreation Department said in a statement Sunday.

The fountain will remain shut down indefinitely until Control Dimensions, which helped reconstruct the historic fountain, assesses and repairs the damage, according to the city.

The fountain in Ferril Lake puts on lighted, choreographed water shows about every half-hour each night after dark.

After decades in disrepair, the fountain was rededicated last year after a $3.2 million overhaul.

The fountain shows resumed just before the Democratic National Convention last August, a little more than 100 years after the original fountain was completed before the Democrats’ 1908 convention.

The new fountain is operated by computer software and operates with energy-efficient LED lights and recycles water, while aerating the lake to reduce algae and improve the habitat for fish.
