Another sign of just how bad the economy is can be found in Room 249 on the second floor of the state Capitol, home to the Senate Democrats press office.
Democrats decided to hire a full-time assistant press secretary starting at $25,000 a year.
Despite the low salary, resumes poured in as soon as people heard the office was hiring.
“I think the high number of applicants is reflective of the down economy and the number of people — especially young people — who want to actively engage in the political process,” said Senate President Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont.
Abbie Vacanti, the Senate Democrats’ communications director, said she has more than 25 applicants, ranging from journalists with 20-plus years of experience to college graduates to people with other skills.
A hiring decision probably won’t be made until later this month, Vacanti said.
The office didn’t pay to post the job but advertised by word of mouth and forwarding information on the position via e-mails.
Among the duties: “Write press releases, media advisories, op-eds and newsletters for senators and set-up press conferences and other media events.”
Experience and education: “A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or a closely related field preferred, including strong academic credentials; and at least two years of journalism, communications or PR experience.”
