COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A University of Florida student was fired by The Gazette of Colorado Springs after the paper found similar and identical passages from The New York Times in four of her stories.
In a note published on the paper’s Web site Tuesday, Gazette Editor Jeff Thomas offered an apology to readers and said Hailey Mac Arthur had been dismissed from her internship.
Mac Arthur didn’t immediately return a message to The Associated Press requesting comment.
Mac Arthur, who started at The Gazette in mid-May, was a sophomore at the University of Florida, where she studied journalism, said David Carlson, executive director of the school’s Center for Media Innovation and Research.
The Gazette is owned by Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom Communications Inc., a privately held company that owns 33 daily newspapers, including The Orange County Register.
