“Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways” ($29.95, Avalon Travel) contains great pictures of old postcards and vintage photographs that bring back the road trips of oldthe ones where your parents would wake you up at 4 a.m. to beat the traffic, and you’d fall asleep again in the back seat, only to awaken in what felt like a foreign country but was really only a few hundred miles down the interstate. Author Jamie Jensen divides the country up vertically into six top-to-bottom treks and horizontally into five, and then breaks them down into smaller pieces, interspersing sites and cities with history and lore, old and new photos and practical getting- around info. Color-coded maps and detailed directions make this as much of a take-along as a planning guide. Kyle Wagner
