Security was tight Tuesday as the man connected to a 2007 shooting case that left one person dead and half a dozen injured learned his fate.
Anthony Chavez, 26, was sentenced to 24 years for his involvement in the deadly shooting as part of an agreement in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Investigators say that about 2 a.m. Nov. 4, 2007, a fight broke out outside a nightclub near 15th and Market streets as the club was closing.
Ted Padilla, 25, was killed. At the time of the shooting, witness Dale Sasse said that earlier in the night at the club a group had made comments to Padilla about his jewelry, and the club’s management kicked out that group.
The initial investigation revealed several shots were fired into a crowd on the sidewalk by a single Latino male. Seven victims suffered gunshot wounds; two were treated and released, and four required hospitalization. Padilla was the only victim who died from his injuries.
Chavez was later identified as the man who opened fire on the group. Chavez fled to Mexico but eventually surrendered and was brought back to Denver to face charges.
Security was tight because Chavez had been threatened previously.
