GREELEY, Colo.—The Greeley firefighters’ and police unions have voted to forgo pay increases next year to help the city cover a projected budget shortfall of at least $7 million.
City officials estimate the unions’ action will save more than $850,000.
In exchange, firefighters have been guaranteed that no firefighters will be laid off. Police officers didn’t get a similar guarantee, but their collective bargaining agreement was extended through 2011.
City officials estimated in June that the budget 2010 deficit would be $4.84 million. They have revised the estimate from $7 million to $8 million, based on tax revenue.
