A Colorado State Patrol trooper who killed himself Tuesday in Woodland Park after his wife alleged she was beaten had been accused of domestic violence in the past.

Two years ago, John D. Hayward, 57, was named in a temporary restraining order that barred him from coming within 200 yards of his estranged wife and her son, who was 6 at the time.

The woman said in a petition for a protection order that Hayward abused her and boasted he had friends on the force who could make her life “miserable.” She also reported Hayward spoke of “mine shafts where no one would ever be found,” according to the document.
