LOS ANGELES—Jack Klunder has been named publisher of the Daily News of Los Angeles, the newspaper announced Friday.
Klunder is a former president of the Los Angeles Times and a 34-year veteran of the newspaper business. His appointment will take effect Monday, the Daily News said.
Klunder replaces Liz Gaier, a ap executive who was named interim publisher in May after Edward R. Moss resigned to become publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The Daily News is a San Fernando Valley newspaper with about 140,000 daily subscribers. It is part of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, a unit of Denver-based ap Inc. that owns eight other regional papers.
Klunder said he wants the Woodland Hills-based Daily News to retain its focus on local news.
“The people of the San Fernando Valley read the Daily News for its local coverage and coverage of City Hall and the schools,” he said in a written statement.
Klunder spent 20 years in management positions at the Times, from 1976 to 1996. From 1999 to 2005 he was vice president of circulation for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. He returned to the Times and was executive vice president of circulation and distribution until earlier this year. In addition, he was president of the Times in 2008.
“Jack’s understanding of our market and his impressive track record make him ideally suited to run the Daily News,” Fred Hamilton, CEO of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, said in a statement.
Earlier this week, Linda Lindus was named publisher of two other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers: the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the Daily Breeze in Torrance. Her appointment takes effect Aug. 17.
While interim publisher of the Daily News, Gaier remained in her role as senior vice president of business development for ap, the Los Angeles Newspaper Group’s majority owner.
