DENVER, Colo.—Colorado Sen. Mark Udall says the federal health care overhaul should include a plan to use the University of Colorado’s model for recruiting doctors for rural areas.

The Democrat told reporters in a conference call Friday that he hopes a bill he is sponsoring with Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina will be incorporated into the final health overhaul awaiting senators when they return to work next month.

The bill would expand a program used at CU, where medical students are sent to rural areas for a month each summer.

Rural areas have about 25 percent of the American population but only about 10 percent of the nation’s doctors.
