CHISHAN, Taiwan — The military announced today that it was sending 4,000 more soldiers to help as it continued to airlift survivors of mudslides triggered by last weekend’s typhoon.
The new troops will join more than 10,000 soldiers racing to save thousands of people stranded in the island’s south, a Defense Ministry statement said. Rescue efforts have been slow because bridges and roads collapsed or were washed out by floodwaters.
The official death toll stands at 108, with 61 listed as missing. But several hundred remain unaccounted for. The storm killed 22 people in the Philippines and eight in China.
