SILT, Colo.—A wildlife rehabitation center near Silt will get $40,000 of a fine to be paid by Exxon Mobil Corp. for the deaths of migratory birds in five states, including Colorado.
Most of the birds died after exposure to natural gas well reserve pits and waste water storage facilities. The company pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of about 85 birds and will have to pay about $7,000 per bird.
Nanci Limbach is the executive director of the Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation, which will receive the $40,000. She says there wasn’t much the rebab center could do for birds contaminated that landed in Exxon Mobil’s wastewater pits in Rio Blanco County.
