LOVELAND, Colo.—Security officers at a Loveland hospital will mostly be pedaling rather than driving on their rounds.
The Medical Center of the Rockies got rid of its gas-guzzling patrol car in July in favor of two bicycles and a more fuel-efficient vehicle, which will be used in bad weather.
The bikes will save the hospital nearly $64 per month in fuel costs and $175 per month in vehicle maintenance. Officers will ride an average of between 12 and 15 miles daily.
Hospital facilities supervisor James Wolfe says the bikes will allow security officers to get closer to the hospital when necessary and have more positive interaction with visitors.
Nine officers share bike duty. They all volunteered to use pedal power for their patrol duties.
