PITTSBURGH — Reds starter Aaron Harang is out for the rest of the season after an emergency appendectomy.

Harang awoke Saturday morning in Pittsburgh with pain near his abdomen. He was examined that afternoon and was driven by team clubhouse manager Rick Stowe back to Cincinnati, where the surgery was performed at The Good Samaritan Hospital.

“They didn’t want him to fly in case there was an emergency situation in the air,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Fortunately, he was close enough to drive. If he got an operation, he wanted to be back in Cincinnati where his family was.”

The Reds’ opening-day starter, Harang was 6-14 with a 4.21 ERA in a team-leading 162 1/3 innings.
