Getting your player ready...

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is not in the lineup today and will miss at least a week after accidentally cutting his left hand after last night’s game.

Seth Smith is starting in his place today in left field.

The Rockies’ best hitter since the all-star break said he was picking up his plate to put in the sink after eating at home when a knife fell off of it. He instinctively reached for it and grabbed the blade. It left him with a deep cut that required a stitch and medical treatment.

“I am messing up the playoffs,” he said with a smile to first base coach Glenallen Hill in the clubhouse. “I can’t believe it. It was just an accident. But now I probably won’t be able to play for a week.”

Some of his teammates are concerned it may take longer because it needs to heal fully so he can grip the bat.

Gonzalez has given the Rockies a spark, moving into the leadoff spot. He has shown power and speed, hitting .373 since the all-star break.

He was clearly disappointed in his misfortune, particularly the timing. He’s wearing a white bandage around his hand.
