Getting your player ready...

Q: Where did the idea for TeamSnap, which allows users to manage recreational sports teams online, come from?

A: The original idea grew out of a need that one of the original founders had for organizing his (basketball) team. He was involved in an activity, and it was a total pain to make sure everybody knew where they were supposed to be and to understand who was going to show up — all of the usual things around arranging an activity. He couldn’t find any existing solutions, so he put together an application.

It turns out there is a tremendous need for that kind of thing. The business opportunity grew out of relatives and friends recognizing that they could use this kind of thing. That’s why ultimately this grew into something that was a tool that is offered now to hundreds of thousands of people.

We have now 17,000 teams and almost 120,000 users. We are in 80 countries around the world. We’re literally used for hundreds of different kinds of activities, including non-sports activities, like Scouting and book groups and religious organizations.

Q: What are the company’s growth plans?

A: We’re looking to raise $1 million. We’re already a part of the way there. That million dollars will allow me to do three things. It will allow me to expand Internet marketing. Most of the company’s growth today has been through word of mouth.

Secondly, it will allow us to accelerate the development of new features. And third, it will allow me to invest in channel and business partnerships that will allow us to offer an even better solution to our customers.

Q: Are you involved in any activities in which you would use TeamSnap?

A: That’s a good question. Being the CEO of a company is an all-consuming task, so right now, I don’t personally use our application because I’m just not involved in too many group activities.
