A construction accident breached a gas line near Horizon High School in Thornton this morning.
The incident happened at about 11:30 a.m. near East 136th Avenue and Holly Street, said Mark Stutz, an Xcel spokesman.
Stutz said the gas-line breach involved underground cable work being done by a contractor, not the utility.
Xcel crews responded to isolate the leak and repair it.
“We may have to cut power for a little bit for safety and repair reasons,” Stutz said.
Horizon High School was evacuated as a safety precaution, an Adams 12 Five Star Schools spokeswoman said.
The school’s 1,800 students already were scheduled to be released at 12:30 p.m. today, so after waiting outside on school grounds for about an hour, they were then dismissed, the district said.
