A Fort Carson soldier from Orlando, Fla., was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Sunday.

Staff Sgt. Randy M. Haney, 27, died in Nangarhar province, the military said, when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

“He wanted to make a difference. He wanted to help other people, even if it affected his own life,” said his wife, Katie. “He felt like he was helping his soldiers. And he knew when he was in Afghanistan that they made a difference.”
