DURANGO, Colo.—La Plata County officials are considering whether to start controlling weeds sprouting on an unfinished subdivision tied up in foreclosure.

The county commissioners are scheduled to vote Tuesday on resolutions that would allow county workers to enter the property.

Vegetation was scraped away on about a dozen lots in the subdivision, but no homes were built. Rod Cook, who heads the county weed department, says the disturbed soil gave the dormant seeds of noxious weeds a place to germinate and spread.

La Plata County has stepped up its weed-fighting efforts in recent years, sometimes pursuing court orders to control weeds on private property.

Owners are billed for the work, and if they don’t pay, a lien is put on the property.
