Three Colorado Springs children are in hot water after reportedly entering a vacant apartment through a window on Monday and putting some twigs on top of a stove.
The children then turned on a burner, causing the twigs to ignite in the unit at the Pine Creek Apartment complex, 854 Chapman Drive, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Lt. David Whitlock, spokesman for the police department, said all the children were boys. One is 4, and the other two are 6.
Police officers and firefighters responded and extinguished the twigs before the fire spread. The apartment was not damaged, and the boys weren’t hurt.
The parents of the boys were notified. Two parents, Desire Jones, 29, and Pablo Salayandia-Marquez, 35, were served a summons for child abuse-neglect.
Whitlock said the two were supposed to be watching their children but weren’t.
A third parent, Nicole Watkins, 26, was served a summons for obstructing a police officer, said Whitlock. She allegedly interfered with the police investigation.
Police said they also are contemplating filing juvenile burglary charges against the intruders.
The children were released to their parents.
