FORT CARSON — The Defense Department says a Colorado-based soldier has died from wounds he suffered in combat in Afghanistan.

The military announced Thursday that 28-year-old Sgt. Youvert Loney of Pohnpei, Micronesia, died Sept. 5 in Abad, Afghanistan.

He was wounded when enemy forces using small arms and recoilless rifles ambushed his convoy.

The military said Loney previously had been awarded the Purple Heart and already had served in Iraq.

Loney was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson.
