HOUSTON — Astros left-hander Mike Hampton has scheduled surgery on his left shoulder for Tuesday in New York City.

Hampton was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14 and decided about two weeks later to have the season-ending surgery. Hampton has a significant partial thickness tear of his left rotator cuff.

Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Hampton, who will turn 37 on Wednesday, is 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA this season in 21 starts for the Astros. He left his start Aug. 13 at Florida after five innings with the injury.

SAN FRANCISCO — Giants ace Tim Lincecum threw a successful bullpen session and could return to the mound as soon as Monday after missing his last start because of spasms and inflammation in his lower back.

MLB won’t punish A-Rod

NEW YORK — Major League Baseball will not punish Alex Rodriguez after completing its investigation into whether he lied about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, The New York Times reported.

Rodriguez admitted in February to using steroids while with the Rangers from 2001-03, but insisted he stopped before he was traded to the Yankees in February 2004.
