LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Construction crews building a retaining wall for a light rail line uncovered fossilized leaves from palm trees, ferns, and flowering plants from just after the dinosaur extinction.
The fossils, in Paleocene epoch rock dating from between 64 and 66 million years ago, were found near U.S. 6 in an area about 8 miles west of downtown Denver.
A spokeswoman for a contractor building the Regional Transportation District’s rail line from Denver to Golden announced the find Monday. A paleontologist from the Denver museum of Nature and Science and volunteers collected specimens from the site over the weekend.
A spokeswoman says the find won’t delay the project.
