ASPEN, Colo.—Only the dead can spend the night at Aspen’s historic Red Butte Cemetery.

The nonprofit association that runs the graveyard has abandoned plans to build a caretaker’s apartment at the site after neighbors objected.

The Red Butte Cemetery Association wanted to include a 1,400-square-foot apartment in a new maintenance building. Some neighbors said that would generate more traffic and spoil the cemetery’s tranquility.

The plan now calls for a 1,300-square-foot maintenance building alone.

The 17-acre cemetery is more than a century old, and many of Aspen’s pioneers are buried there. It has 4,200 burial sites, about 1,400 of them unused.
