FRESNO, Calif. — Jeremy Avery scored on a 67-yard screen pass and added a 74-yard run, providing just two of the many highlight-reel plays in No. 10 Boise State’s 51-34 victory over Fresno State on Friday night.
Titus Young scored two touchdowns, including a diving fumble recovery in the end zone after Avery ran it 74 yards to the 1 as Boise State (3-0, 1-0) won for the 57th time in its past 59 Western Athletic Conference games.
Yet few were as entertaining as this one. The Broncos broke out to a 24-3 lead then had to scramble to win this one and keep alive its hopes for making it back to a Bowl Championship Series game.
Fresno State (1-2, 0-1) got three touchdown runs of at least 60 yards from Ryan Mathews but again lost for the 10th straight time against teams ranked in the top 25.
Big Ten suspends Michigan’s Mouton
PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton was suspended by the Big Ten Conference for one game for punching a Notre Dame player during last week’s game.
Video of the incident during Saturday’s 38-34 Wolverines victory in Ann Arbor, Mich., spread on the Internet. Mouton appears to punch lineman Eric Olsen under the chin as they get up from the turf following a play midway through the second quarter.

Carroll undecided on QB
SEATTLE — USC coach Pete Carroll hasn’t said if Matt Barkley or Aaron Corp will start at quarterback today against Washington.
Barkley threw during the third- ranked Trojans’ short walkthrough practice at Husky Stadium. Carroll insisted the freshman could play, despite a bruised shoulder that sidelined him Monday through Thursday.
All-American safety Taylor Mays was moving around for the second consecutive practice but continues to rest a sprained knee ligament. The Seattle native plans to suit up today, though Carroll said Mays also may not find out whether he’s playing until kickoff.
“That’s when you are going to know who is going to be starting,” Carroll said.
Footnotes.
The NCAA declared Texas cornerback Deon Beasley academically eligible to play today against Texas Tech.
• Cincinnati starting linebacker Curtis Young is expected to miss up to six weeks after having surgery on his right knee.
• Akron suspended starting quarterback Chris Jacquemain for an indefinite period for violating an undisclosed team policy.
• California added a home-and- home series with Texas to its schedule in 2015 and 2016.
