COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 26-year-old soldier based at Fort Carson has died in a roadside explosion that hit his vehicle in Afghanistan.

Pfc. William Meredith of Virginia Beach, Va., died Monday in Kandahar. He was assigned to the 569th Engineer Company, 4th Engineer Battalion at Fort Carson, south of Colorado Springs.

Meredith joined the Army last year and trained to be a combat engineer before he was sent to Fort Carson. He was deployed with the unit in April.

The 4th Engineer Battalion specializes in clearing bombs from heavily traveled highways the Army uses to haul supplies.

Among the honors Meredith earned were the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge, awarded for facing the enemy in combat.
