It’s another sure sign that summer has come and gone: The highest paved road in North America has shut for the season.
Colorado 5 — the road to the summit of Mount Evans — is closed and will not reopen until spring, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The Mount Evans road ends in a parking lot at an elevation of 14,130 feet, just over 100 feet shy of Mount Evans summit of 14,264 feet.
The last, or top, 5 miles of the road closed earlier this month, the day after Labor Day, in agreement with U.S. Forest Service directives.
