DENVER—It could be three months before United Food and Commercial Workers leaders decide whether a local union representing Colorado grocery workers can redo its election for president.
A count this week showed Kim Cordova defeated incumbent Ernest Duran Jr. for president of UFCW Local 7 in a mail-in election for 28 union positions. The union hasn’t released exact election results. Cordova is expected to take office Jan. 1.
UFCW Local 7 attorney Crisanta Duran, who is Duran’s daughter, said Wednesday that she and others who were on her father’s slate plan to ask international UFCW leaders for a redo of the election. She said leaders would have three months to decide. Crisanta Duran had run for secretary-treasurer but lost.
Ms. Duran said there are allegations that election rules were violated, and some members didn’t receive their ballots. She said the election also was marred by false allegations of nepotism and misspending of union dues by her family.
If Mr. Duran’s slate loses its request for a redo of the election, they could appeal to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Cordova has said she feels she won by a significant margin. “They’re just upset they lost,” she said Tuesday.
