FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Larimer County sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in an attack on two women who were hiking in northern Colorado.
Sheriff’s officials said Thursday they arrested 38-year-old James Jud Bondsteel of Loveland on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, criminal attempt to commit sexual assault, first- and second-degree assault and menacing with a deadly weapon.
Bondsteel was being held in the Larimer County jail on $100,000 bond. His lawyer declined to comment on the case.
The women say they were attacked by a knife-wielding man on a trail in the Roosevelt National Forest northwest of Fort Collins on Sept. 13. Deputies believe the man intended to sexually assault the women.
Investigators say the man held a knife to one woman’s throat. The pair fought him off with a hiking stick.
The women have been identified only as a 38-year-old from Eaton and a 46-year-old from Casper, Wyo. The Casper woman was treated for cuts to her hands and shoulder.
