About 100 Arapahoe County homeowners surprised with notices of back taxes due at the end of October have gotten a 30-day reprieve while the county assessor figures out an equitable method for settling the bills.

Some homeowners in the Sorrel Ranch Metropolitan District found out recently that they had not been charged for property taxes owed to the district.

The error was made by the Arapahoe County Assessor’s Office in 2004, when the district was formed.

Some of the bills were as high as $1,600.

When the district notified the county about the mistake, the county sent notices advising the property owners that the back taxes were due by the end of October. Now the date has been pushed back to Nov. 30.

The county and the district are working on ways to help residents reconcile the bills. The county may allow installment payments or ease the interest that kicks after the Nov. 30 deadline.

“We deeply regret this error and understand the financial impact it will have on Sorrel Ranch property owners,” said County Assessor Corbin Sakdol. “We are doing everything we can within the limits of the law to to help ease this situation.”

The 100 property owners, who all live in condominiums, can call the Treasurer’s Office at 303-795-4550 for more information.
