A truck driver was severely burned and might have broken his leg when a flash fire erupted from his tanker at Mesa Oil in Arvada Thursday.

The fire was out when Arvada firefighters arrived, but the truck was “wrinkled” from the concussion, according to a statement from the department.

The truck driver was not identified.

He was airlifted to University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, but his condition was not available Thursday evening.

Witnesses told authorities the man was atop the tanker, preparing to off-load used oil.

Mesa Oil collects and recycles more than 15 million gallons of used oil each year, according to the company’s website.

A flash fire can be caused by dust that ignites in fumes or gases, according to the fire department.
