ASPEN, Colo.—A transit system serving a busy western Colorado ski valley is fighting the flu by treating buses with a virus-killing spray, paying for drivers’ flu shots and offering hand sanitizer to passengers.
The Roaring Fork Transit Authority says buses will be treated weekly with the spray starting next month. If a sick person sneezes on a treated area, the spray is said to kill the virus on contact.
The authority will pay for its drivers to get the seasonal flu virus. Transit workers aren’t on the priority list for the separate swine flu vaccine.
Hand sanitzer will be available near the front of the buses.
The Roaring Fork system serves Aspen, Glenwood Springs and Rifle and operates shuttles to Aspen ski areas. It carried 4.1 million passengers in 2006.
State health officials in Denver say three Coloradans have died this month because of swine flu.
University of Colorado at Boulder said Friday the number of students going to the campus health center with flulike symptoms has dropped for two weeks in a row.
