October’s here at last, and the buzz is beginning about what costumes to wear and what parties to attend.
A group of ladies visiting Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret (1601 Arapahoe St.) this weekend already have the costume thing down pat: The Kinsey Sicks Dragapella Beauty Shop Quartet are on their merry way from San Francisco.
Yes, “dragapella.” As in, an a capella barbershop quartet, but in drag. Hence, they are a “beauty shop” quartet. Let’s be correct here.
The Kinseys got their start more than 15 years ago and since then have toured their witty, glamorous act around North America and Europe.
On their current tour, they’re performing two seperate shows: “Wake the (bleep) Up America!” and one with a lewder title — for short, it’ll be nicknamed “Other Bawdy Parts.”
“America” is a parody of network morning news shows, exploring the permeable boundary between news and entertainment. As the girls say on their website, they are themselves “good entertainment and bad news,” putting “the ‘ew’ in ‘The View.'”
The second show, “Bawdy Parts,” is a more traditional drag show, with bits of comedy sprinkled among song parodies of Britney Spears, Beyonce and other favorite targets.
All of this, once again, is performed in innocent-sounding four-part harmony.
The Kinsey Sicks kick off October in high style tonight and Saturday with two shows each. See “America” at 7 both nights and “Bawdy Parts” at 9 p.m.
Tickets are $35 per show, or $45 for both. To order tickets, call 303-293-0075.
Desperate houseboys
Tonight’s the night for “Celebrities and Celebrations” at Suite Two Hundred (1427 Larimer St.). It’s a birthday party for Paulina Szafranski, Lotus Entertainment’s vice president of marketing, and it looks to be a rager.
As a special present for Szafranski, TV and film actor Jesse Metcalfe will be in attendance. Metcalfe rose to fame on the television series “Desperate Housewives” — remember the hot, young gardener? With the sculpted brows? That’s him.
DJ Danny will spin in the main room while DJ Seth Abrumz will work the crowd in the Marquis area, and drink and bottle specials will be flowing. As always, there’s no cover, but expect a crowd.
In other birthday news . . .
It’s been a year since Caribbean restaurant and bar 8 Rivers (1550 Blake St.) moved to its LoDo location, and this weekend they’re throwing a party.
The hot spot is hosting live reggae all weekend, with By All Means and Selasee Atiase performing tonight, and DJ Uplifter spinning late-night on Saturday.
Stop in and sample 8 Rivers’ famous jerk chicken or stewed oxtails, then sip on some rum, and jam out.
Check out the restaurant’s new “Kingston Feast”: 2 pounds of smoked jerk Alaskan king crab legs and a 24-ounce Red Stripe, at $50 per person. The music starts at 9 p.m. tonight, and at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Who let the cats out?
The “cougar” thing just will not die. It’s somewhat boggling that women would self-apply a term that implies they are old and undesirable yet are somehow able to sneakily entrap younger men. It’s condescending at best, and insulting at worst.
Nonetheless, the cougar craze continues. If cougars are your thing, whether you call yourself one or are looking for one, Minibar (222 Columbine St.) is the place to be on Wednesdays.
The cute Cherry Creek hangout is hosting viewing parties for the ABC network comedy “Cougar Town.” The weekly “Cougar Night” starts with happy hour at 6 p.m. and continues through the evening with drink specials and a “Cougar X-ing” contest.
Happy, um, hunting.
