DENVER—President Barack Obama has nominated Gov. Bill Ritter’s deputy chief of staff to be the top federal prosecutor in Colorado.
Sen. Mark Udall announced Wednesday that Stephanie Villafuerte (vee-yah-foo-EHR’-tay) has been nominated for U.S. attorney.
Udall says former Larimer County Undersheriff John Kammerzel (KAM’-ehr-zel) also has been nominated for U.S. marshal for Colorado.
Villafuerte has served chief deputy Denver district attorney and as an assistant U.S. attorney. She is a board member of the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
She graduated from the University of Denver in 1987 and earned her law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Kammerzel is director of the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, which establishes training criteria for officers.
He also served as the director of the County Sheriffs of Colorado and with the Rio Blanco County sheriff’s department and the Colorado State Patrol.
Both nominations require Senate confirmation. Udall spokeswoman Tara Trujillo said the votes have not been scheduled.
“I believe these honorable public servants would serve well in these government roles and begin addressing the challenges that face our nation and directly affect the people of Colorado,” Udall said in a statement.
