IRVING, Texas — Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said running back Marion Barber should play Sunday against the Broncos.

Barber missed Monday night’s 21-7 victory over Carolina after injuring a thigh the previous week. He was close to ready Monday, but the medical staff decided to hold him out.

Jones said Thursday that Barber showed more progress than expected Wednesday. Barber was in full gear for Thursday’s practice.

Barber’s return gained urgency when backup Felix Jones sprained a left knee ligament against the Panthers. The second-year back from Arkansas is not expected to play against the Broncos.

Seau campaigns for return

BOSTON — Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau is trying out some new careers this fall as part of a television show called “Sports Jobs.” What he really wants is his old one back.

“That would be nice,” he said after riding on the Zamboni between periods of Thursday night’s NHL opener between the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals.

“Tell Belichick to call me.”

Seau already has come out of retirement twice to play for Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Last year, the 12-time Pro Bowl selection joined the team in December after it was struck by a rash of injuries; this year, the Patriots have already lost linebacker Jerod Mayo for six to eight weeks.

Hasselbeck out again

RENTON, Wash. — Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice and remains likely to miss a second consecutive game Sunday at Indianapolis.

Hasselbeck did some light throwing behind the huddle. It was the most he’s done in a practice since he broke a rib at San Francisco on Sept. 20.

Seneca Wallace again ran the offense and figures to start.

Tackle Walter Jones and guard Rob Sims — the left side of Seattle’s offensive line — also were out injured.

Footnotes.

Giants safety Kenny Phillips has had microfracture surgery on his left knee and will have to wait about five months before he can start to run.

• Bills starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin was placed on season-ending injured reserve to clear room for the team to add running back Marshawn Lynch to the active roster. Lynch completed an NFL-imposed three-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

• Browns running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring) and kicker Phil Dawson (knee) missed their second straight day of practice and appear likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Bengals.

• Texans cornerback Jacques Reeves will miss Sunday’s game against Oakland after breaking his right pinkie finger during warm-ups for practice.

• The 49ers are turning to rookie running back Glen Coffee, a third-round draft pick, during the next few weeks while Frank Gore is sidelined with an injury to his right ankle.
