HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo.—Highlands Ranch High School is making counselors available to students after a sophomore collapsed and died after a cross country run.

Arapahoe County coroner’s investigator Tamara Davis says it could be eight to 10 weeks before investigators determine why 15-year-old Quinton Sanford died Wednesday but that his death appears to be natural.

Principal Jerry Goings told parents in a letter Thursday that Sanford died after collapsing during a run with parents and staff on the Highline Canal. Sanford’s father also was at the run.

Goings says CPR was administered and 911 was called, but Quinton died on his way to the hospital in an ambulance.

Sanford has siblings at Cresthill Middle School and Eagle Ridge Elementary.

Sophomore Ashlee Phipps said Sanford, who played soccer and ran cross country, participated in a sports program for special education students.

“I don’t think he had one bad bone in his body,” Phipps said. “I just moved here and he was the first person to talk to me. He just showed me around the school and made me laugh. Everbody loved him.”
