Derek Vincent Smith lived up to Pretty Lights’ name — and reputation — at the Fox Theatre on Thursday. Photos by Nathan Rist.

I’ll always remember the first time I heard about Fort Collins-based DJ Pretty Lights. It was a Facebook status update in which someone had written: “Pretty Lights on (CU-Boulder’s) Farrand Field.” My first reaction was, “What sort of pretty lights?” Instead, it was a note about the back-to-school concert. Since then, I’ve continued to hear emphatic praise for Derek Vincent Smith and live drummer Cory Eberhard and, I must admit, I was intrigued. If Boulder produced 3OH!3, what kind of dance-rock insanity could Fort Collins produce? This was my first time seeing Pretty Lights and I was not disappointed. — Nathan Rist
