A 27-year-old Fort Collins man died today of injuries from a crash last night in which he slammed his motorcycle into the side of an sport utility vehicle and ignited a fire, officials say.
Peter Hiltbrand was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies after the 6 p.m. crash at the intersection of Drake Road and Raintree Drive, and he was later pronounced dead, according to a Fort Collins police news release.
Hiltbrand was riding his 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle west on Drake when he collided into the side of a 1994 Chevrolet SUV that was going north on Raintree, the release says.
The Poudre Fire Authority put out the fire, and Hiltbrand was rushed to the hospital. The 22-year-old SUV driver was not injured, according to the release.
Witnesses told investigators the motorcycle had been speeding before the collision and that the SUV had stopped at a stop sign before crossing the intersection, police say.
The crash is still under investigation.
