played at the Saturday night as part of the tour for the 24-year-old singer-songwriter’s sophomore album, “Breakthrough.” The show opened with a large-screen video of Caillat running through a hallway, with a voice telling her she was going to be late. She then sauntered onto the stage and immediately began singing “I Won’t,” the first track off of her new disc.
She found time to joke around with someone from her crew, possibly her stage manager, about the fact that he was wearing a “woman’s” concert T-shirt of hers. (She said he looked cute, but it was a still woman’s T.) She was welcomed by an all-ages crowd of people who knew sang along with every breezy lyric. Her clear, airy voice sounded easy and natural, like she was speaking with melody, not trying to actually sing.
She sang a PG-rated version of “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls, slowing it down to her own sultry pace. When she belted out “Realize,” her focus was primarily on her pianist; she walked back and forth to him throughout the song, making what appeared to be a deep connection. With the rest of the songs, you couldn’t help but feel she was singing just for the audience.
Singer and guitar player was one of the two members of his band, flanked by a bandmate on a box playing a congo. Hall sported blonde dreads, bare feet and a heavy Jamaican accent throughout his songs.
Follow-up had the girls swooning, impressed with his fancy footwork, using pedals to make up for missing drums and other special effects. The whole crowd sang along with his song “Collide.” — Jennifer Cohen
