LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Authorities say a former Grand Junction police officer accused of sexual assault in Mesa County has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jefferson County sheriff’s officials said Wednesday that the body of 35-year-old Glenn Coyne was discovered a day earlier by housekeepers at a hotel in Jefferson County, more than 200 miles from Mesa County.
Coyne had recently posted bond in Mesa County after being arrested last week on charges of first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary. He was fired after two years as a Grand Junction officer.
Authorities say Coyne was accused of assaulting a woman who called him for follow-up help after Coyne and other officers went to her house on a family matter.
District Attorney Pete Hautzinger said the investigation into allegations against Coyne remains active, and an affidavit remains sealed. He said there are no other suspects in the case. He declined to comment on whether there are other accusers.
Coyne is survived by a wife and two children.
Interim Police Chief John Camper said the police department was saddened by news of Coyne’s death.
“This entire incident has been very difficult for everyone involved, and these latest developments only make the situation more tragic,” Camper said.
