KABUL—New details of one of the deadliest attacks against American troops in Afghanistan are emerging.

An Army spokesman in nearby Jalalabad says insurgents breached the perimeter of a U.S. outpost before being repelled in a firefight that lasted nearly six hours on Saturday.

Eight American and three Afghan soldiers were killed, the heaviest U.S. loss of life in a single battle there in more than a year.

The military hasn’t released their names, but a defense official said at least some were from Fort Carson.

Most U.S. installations in Iraq and Afghanistan are heavily guarded with rings of razor wire, huge sand-filled barriers, blast walls and security cameras. It is rare—almost unheard of—for insurgents to breach such defenses and get inside.

NATO says around 100 insurgents were killed in the battle. The local police chief was also captured by the attackers and executed.
