BATTLEMENT MESA, Colo.—More than 400 people have signed a petition requesting a health study before gas drilling is approved in the western Colorado community of Battlement Mesa.

Residents have asked Garfield County for an independent study, saying one is warranted because of the high number of retirees in the community. Antero Resources wants to drill as many as 200 wells within Battlement Mesa.

The Garfield County commissioners have referred the request for a study to the county health department staff.

Battlement Mesa was intended for Exxon workers during the oil shale boom that ended in the early 1980s. The community atop a mesa about 200 miles west of Denver was marketed to retirees after and oil and gas workers left the area.
